Developing Internet Activities

Project 10: Other types of activities

(Note: All assignments that must be turned in are in green. Your answers do NOT have to be publishable in a professional journal. Write only what is needed to answer the questions. You will NOT be graded on your English. Remember, NO ONE is perfect...not even me. Send all assignments to: JoAnn Miller (miller@netservice.com.mx). You can begin the next assignment before you get your feedback. You may be asked to rewrite something, but you cannot FAIL this course.)

There are a lot of other things you can do with the Internet. Here are some examples of four different types of activities you can use in class.

Surf through all of them and then choose TWO categories of activities and, for each one, answer these questions:

Do you think you could use the activity in a class?
                         At what level?
                         How would you use it?
Develop a brief lesson plan for using the activity in a specific unit in one of our courses.
                         Send it all to me.

Categories:  International Collaborations, Keypals, Puzzle Makers, Virtual Trips

International Collaborations: These are activities that are more often used in content classrooms (science, social studies, etc.), but there is no reason they can’t be used in an EFL course:

The International Boiling Point Project
Volcanoes
Husbands’ and Wives’ Roles

Implicit Association Test

Keypals: These are the new versions of pen-pals, but here students write each other over the internet. A lot of organizations exist to help you find key-pals.

Here is an interesting article as an introduction to using e-mail in class : E-mail Activities in the ESL Writing Class  by Ron Belisle
This article talks about problems you can have with keypals and it has links to find keypals: E-Mail Keypals for Language Fluency by Thomas N. Robb.

Puzzle Makers: These are handy little on-line programs that help you make word games.

Quia is It's really easy for creating a quick home page which can contain links to a myriad of Web based games, quizzes, Scavenger Hunt--all amazingly quick and simple to create. Start with Start here and then surf around and look at the activities. Try to make one…
Puzzlemaker
is from Discovery.com. You can make crisscross puzzles (like crosswords) and even add them to a Word document or save them there. Try it out.

Virtual Trips: These are just what they seem…you go to far-away places without leaving the computer. Some are on-going trips where you accompany other people as they travel. Look at these adventures:

The Inca Project
Iditarod 2000
The Desert Tour
World Surfari

Congratulations!! You've finished!!!
